You love your pet and would want to do everything possible to keep him really
happy. Sometimes you work for long hours or are away over the weekend and
your wonderful pet can’t be with you. You feel sorry but have no idea what
to do. Given a choice, you would probably want to spend all your time with
your marvelous pet. However economic times are tough and this is not a viable
option.
During holidays your pet gets used to all the attention and pampering
from family members. Suddenly everyone is away, back to school and work
and your pet is left all alone. Just like human beings, dogs get bored
and feel lonely. There are a number of tactics you can put to use to keep
the dog busy, healthy and less bored.
1. Check if there is a dog daycare centre available in your area. Choose
one that’s best suited for your dog. Daycare for a puppy may not necessarily
be suitable for an old dog. Puppies need much more attention and can’t
be left alone more than a couple of hours.
2. In a number of cities you will find a dog walker cum trainer. Get one
to take your lovely dog for a one or two hours walk. Ensure that the one
you engage is qualified and knowledgeable and charges a reasonable fee.
You may also give instructions on the skills you require your dog trained
on.
3. Leave your dog in the house with appropriate toys, plenty of fresh
water, and the TV or radio on. Leaving you dog outside is counterproductive
as he starts to develop undesirable barking.
4. Before leaving, ensure your dog is cleaned and has a few minutes of
exercise. To minimize anxiety, leave without notice.
5. Once back home, take your time to exercise and stimulate your dog.
This increases the bonding and the pet will always expect this. A dog
that is properly feed and exercised is healthier and happier than one
that’s neglected.
6. Sometime you’ll find your dog has messed up the house. Don’t yell or
punish your dog. Screaming will certainly not help; your dog will not
understand what exactly has made you mad. The events making you crazy
may have happened several hours before and your poor dog can’t remember.
7. Consider create training. You will need to introduce this slowly and
in stages. Do a bit of research to get it right and come up with the most
suitable form.
