Your lovely dog is filthy and requires a quick shower. You may be a first
time pet owner. You try to clean him with a hosepipe and you end up with
soaked clothes. You are wet all over. What’s the solution? What’s the smartest
way to do it?
Just jump into the shower together. Sounds awful? Your folks might laugh
at you, or even think you are crazy.
This probably is the best way to have you pets super-clean. From the
tiny Chihuahua dog breed to the big Irish wolfhound, a shower is a must.
Make sure that the shower stall available is the type that has a hand
held shower massager or with an extended cord. Any other type will not
be appropriate. If that’s not available you can use a basin and a jar.
Get the dog in gently by the collar. Chances are that he will not be
thrilled by this exercise. By this time you should have fully undressed.
It’s a difficult undertaking for first timers but the veterans find a
lot of fun in this call of duty. In any case this is something you do
once in a month or so. Rinse the dog; rub soap gently until the dog is
frothy. Keep the soap off the eyes. Rinse dog with clean water using the
jar or massager. Squeeze out excess water thoroughly down his back and
legs.
Now it’s your turn. Wash yourself, nicely removing all the dog hair off
your entire body. Turn off water or clean the basin and release your dog
out of the shower, putting a dry towel on top of him. Dry him gently,
of course, with your towel on. For a puppy, all you need is a basin. Pour
water and apply soap gently and then slowly rinse till dry. Then keep
the puppy in a warm place.
A cat will generally groom and clean himself with his tongue. You may
have noticed they are continually licking the bodies. An occasional brushing
will do no harm.
Wow. Your pet is sparkling clean and has no disgusting smell. It’s that
simple.
It may be useful to keep a diary of events for your pet. The next shower
date, vet appointment, teeth brushing or even nail cutting. With so much
going on in your life, how will you remember?
If you find this difficult, consider taking your dog to the dog grooming
salon in your area. This certainly isn’t a free service and you will be
required to pay for it. In these challenging economic times, it may be
worthwhile for you to research and get the best deal available.
As simple as this sounds, some people still make mistakes while showering
their dogs. Some may be costly while others are totally unpleasant to
your pet.
Are you making these mistakes while showering your pet?
? Not preventing the water entering the ears. Some people use cotton wool
to cover the ears. As long as it does not absorb water, this may work.
If it does, your efforts will be counter productive. It advisable to be
careful while washing the ear areas.
? Giving your dog too many or too few showers. Too many showers will cause
skin irritation while too few will lead to a disgusting smell. A shower
once every five weeks is usually adequate.
? Leaving your dog outdoor after the shower during winter. A dog is mammal
and will be adversely affected by cold weather. Dry your dog after the
shower and leave him indoors for a while.
? Not brushing between showers. Brush your dog regularly to remove tangles
and mats from the hair. This is especially applicable to longhaired dogs.
? Not checking for and removing ticks from your pet. While drying your
dog, check for any ticks. You can a put your gloves on and physically
remove any that you find.
? Failing to provide a rubber mat for your pet. With so much soap in the
bathroom the floor is certainly slippery. Without a mat your dog may slip
and get injured. The trauma and vet bills are certainly not very pleasant.
It important to mention, that you also need to clean the dog shelter
regularly. This keeps the dog clean a little longer.
