Research shows that keeping a pet improves an individual’s temperament, sense of well being and even the social interactions with other people. The effect on the personality is so profound and indisputable that pet therapy is gaining prominence by the day. Apparently, the additional simple interactions and chores that the furred friends bring are exactly what the modern hurried lifestyle needs. A time when patients leaving a hospital will be totting along a cat or puppy is quite conceivable, actually.

In the social scene, men have realized the ultimate bait when it comes to netting women. As mice are drawn towards cheese, so are women towards any pet. So men have turned to these furred companions to ease the way to these jaded hearts. They have realized that most women just drop their guards at the sight of a pet, be it a ferret on a man’s sleeve or an awkward puppy in some park. What these pets get the men is the chance to put in a well-chosen word edgewise while the lady croons over the pet. And through such episodes, the lady slowly comes to see the man’s sentimental side, instead of the marauding predator that every woman seems to see in every other man. All in all, the social scene becomes that much more agreeable to the man’s goals. Incidences of social awkwardness and vainly trying to make an impression reduce. The dating scene also suffers from less self-consciousness and brings fewer headaches to the man.

Many people suffer from too much disorganization in their lives. Most of this disorganization is brought about by plain laziness, like waking up just in time to grab a cab and get into office in the nick of time. However, with a pet around, the stakes rise. Any laziness can get costly. For example, failing to walk the dog in the morning may mean cleaning a lot of mess on the carpet in the evening. A bored pet may also turn to the household furniture for amusement – and its idea of fun may differ from the household owner’s idea. The average pet owner needs only one such nasty incident to become organized- by getting early enough to walk the dog before heading into office. This new lifestyle will demand a higher level of discipline, of course. It will also demand more responsibility- for any misplaced object can very well start an accident. But driven by sheer necessity, the person develops persistence with these new principles. With time, these principles spill over to other areas of the person, and a generally more effective personality emerges. .

 

Pets have been known to release impending family tensions. The modern family has all sorts of friction, and every once in a while eruptions do occur. And the advantages apply to all people- whether it’s the socially inept guy or the one with an anger management problem. It is with this in the background that the household pet should be considered with more appreciation than exasperation. Instead of punishing it for breaking a trivial human law, it might be far more effective to just look the pet in the eye and express gratitude to it. For in some cases, “since the pet was around, hence the family now”.
